Assistant Professor, 2024
West Los Angeles College
Tenure Track Portfolio
Self-Evaluation:
As I continue to grow within the Film Production Department at West Los Angeles College, I have created positive changes, such as grading by clicking in the Rubric Criteria, which I began last summer. I have created exciting opportunities for students in emerging technologies related to Virtual Production, Gaming, Animation, and Visual Effects. I have taken students to Virtual Production companies and studios, where they have learned tremendously. Our students have also gotten to know the hiring staff at Global Objects, and have learned how to use cameras to scan 3D objects into computers for 3D environments.
During this past year, I assembled a strong advisory board for my curriculum and worked hard to not only ensure that the Certificate of Achievement in Virtual Production was approved, but to ensure that students are receiving the best, cutting edge, appropriate education in this area. I am excited to see the fruits of this labor in the form of students that will be well-prepared to work in these fields and enjoying successful, fulfilling, careers that benefit our world. In addition to Phil Galler and Eric Rigney, I have invited Brian Pohl, the most prominent Unreal Engine educator in the world to teach for us. He would like to begin in 2025. I have also invited Jeanette Moreno King, the President of the Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, to join our team. I am still corresponding with Ken Nakada from Amazon Studios and we will hopefully be able to visit Amazon soon. I have tirelessly researched affordable ways to acquire equipment necessary to teach our students and am working with our administration to do just that.
My colleagues are hard working, kind people. I am grateful to be a member of the Student Success Committee, IDEA FIG, and WEC. Thanks to Anna Chiang, Tiffany Miller and Kimberly Manner, we have successfully created a lab of high-end gaming computers, that we utilized this Fall for FLM PRD 201. As I noted last year, it feels great to make such positive change in such a short period of time. I have also engaged in many DEIA Professional Development opportunities, as will be discussed in length below.
I have divided this Self-Evaluation into seven sections. Please click on a section heading to jump to that section. To return to this list, click on the section heading within the section you are reading:
I am most proud that after months of hard work, the Certificate of Achievement in Virtual Production has been approved. I have also met with Eric Elder and Anna Chiang regarding the Gaming certificate, even speaking at LAGameConEdu. As mentioned above, I am proud that I have networked to assemble an advisory board of the very top innovators in Virtual Production, who are ready and willing to educate our students to be job-ready, and to offer them internships and employment. Most of these advisory board members attended our Advisory Board Meeting on Saturday, April 27, 2024. This is a result of intense networking, seeking out opportunities, and attending events recommended by Tiffany Miller. As such, we have successfully taught FLM PRD 201 three times, this last time in a new lab TLC 405, with new computers recommended by Phil Galler from Lux Machina. We have also successfully taught FLM PRD 203 one time. Please read more about these accomplishments below:
-
Certificate of Achievement in Virtual Production: With Jason Librande's guidance, I completed all of the steps to realizing this goal:
May, 2024: Completed the comprehensive Certificate of Achievement in Virtual Production Narrative, using the Program and Course Approval Handbook (PCAH), and ensuring that data and job projections justify this Certificate.
May, 2024: Emailed six regional colleges for collegial consultation and to ensure that they did not challenge this certificate.
May, 2024: Forwarded additional documents, such as Advisory Board minutes and enrollment projections to Jason Librande for CTE Regional Consortium Application.
June 20, 2024: Attended Los Angeles Regional Consortium (LARC) Program Recommendation Meeting, as Tiffany Miller obtained Virtual Production Certificate of Achievement recommendation from LARC.
September 18, 2024: Attended the West Los Angeles College Curriculum Committee Meeting, obtaining new program approval. -

Film Production 201:
In Spring 2024, I taught the second FLM PRD 201 class, still on Mac computers. Students spent hours creating even more robust environments than they did in Spring 2023. For example, Omar Revilla created a whole video game story, shown below.-
New Computer Lab:
This Fall 2024, thanks to advice from Phil Galler, help from Tiffany Miller, and our collaboration with Anna Chiang, we were fortunate enough to have a brand-new computer lab in TLC 405, with state-of-the-art HP Omen Computers, complete with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs. We also hosted the Virtual Production company, Global Objects, who explained how to scan 3D objects into computers, and offered employment to our students. See photo of lab and guest speakers below, under Department Service. Our international student, Emilia Torres used one of these power-house computers to create an impressive scene, complete with light shafts, shown below. Please see additional videos below of student work from Film Production 201. Also, please go to Graded Assignments for more examples of student work. Please be sure to turn on the sound, and note that a play button appears in the center of each video, allowing you to start and stop playback.

Film Production 203: In Spring 2024, I helped Eric Rigney get up to speed to teach how to marry a virtual camera with digital camera in Unreal Engine. Eric and I were resourceful and made the class a success through field trips and in-class instruction. Meanwhile, we received quotes for proper equipment. We are still working with the administration to iron out the purchase of proper equipment to ensure smooth operation of this important class. This Spring, 2025, I am excited to announce that Eric Rigney will partner with Evan Cervantes from Lux Machina to co-teach FLM PRD 203, offering unparalleled education in Virtual Production to our students. Please see Mo-Sys, Lux Machina and Sony Pixomondo field trip and excursion videos below. Please make sure to watch the Sony Pixomondo Star Trek Sizzle reel and particle video. They are amazing!

I have always worked to promote and contribute to a diverse, respectful, inclusive, and equitable environment for students, colleagues, and community members. However, this year, I have embarked upon an investigative journey to deepen these values, which is documented throughout this tenure portfolio, and especially in the Professional Development section of this Self-Evaluation. I am engaging in many Professional Development opportunities and learning strategies that consider anti-racism, diverse abilities, religion, gender, sexual orientation, LGBTQIA+ language, national origin, or immigration identities, perspectives, and / or experiences, as well as unconscious bias.
As shown below, I am deeply dedicated to continuous self-growth and progress through active participation in DEIA professional development and learning opportunities. I have utilized these opportunities for students, faculty, and / or staff specifically as follows:
-
Teaching practice:
-
LACCD | ODEI | CTE Employees Training: Attended LACCD | ODEIA Training, on 11/20/2023 and 3/22/2024, with District Compliance Officer, Victoria Friedman, which covered information about District policy, procedure, and legal requirements related to Title IX, DHR (Discrimination, Harassment, Retaliation), and DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility).
-
Equity Trek: Attended WLAC | Equity Trek on February 2, 2024. Faculty, staff, and administrators walked around campus and uncovered the messages physical spaces convey to students and examined how these may affect their ability to succeed. This was a great way to get our steps in while figuring out how we could reinforce existing resources at West to better support all students.
-
CRPP: I am participating in the Culturally Responsive Pedagogical Practices (CRPP) grant, guided by Tiffany Lanoix and have attended two meetings, so far. I have a canvas shell for my work, and a coach, Ronnie Felder. I have learned that strategies that will help help Black students achieve success will help all students. I have also learned through the Black Student Roundtable that in-person classes, feeling supported, and awareness of campus resources are instrumental to success. Please click the image below for our introductory pdf:
-
Access to Resources: I have therefore joined forces with Gary Dagg and Imhotep Coleman to give our FLM PRD 101 students tours of Campus Resources on the first day of class. We begin with the Welcome Center, then go to DSPS, EOPS, Admissions and Records, the Counseling Department, Basic Needs, including the Food Pantry, and Wardrobe Services. We also guide students to the Child Development Center and Mental Wellbeing and Health services. As part of this CRPP grant, I will soon provide an analysis of equity data for my division and at least one of my own classes. I will then adopt various teaching practices to increase success rates for Black students at WLAC.
-
Liquid Syllabus: According to Michelle Pacansky-Brock, a liquid syllabus is a humanizing element that ensures students start a course feeling supported by their instructor. I have created a compassionate liquid syllabus that also contains well organized student resource information. I am currently adjusting my liquid syllabus template to be more ADA accessible. Once I have achieved this goal, it will be a template for all syllabi going forward. Please see my Liquid Syllabus:
-
Mental Health: I have also incorporated a discussion of mental health awareness into my in-person classes, in which we take a deeper dive into campus and community resources such as Timely Care, and local mental health resources outside of WLAC.
-
-
Service to the college or district:
-
Student Success Committee (SSC): Knowing how important mental health and other resources are to students in addition to giving tours of WLAC resources mentioned above, I am working with the SSC to incorporate a list of these resources in a module at the top of all Canvas Shells, as is already standard at LACC. This list will also incorporate a quiz that ensures students will have viewed these resources.
-
SSC Exploring Opportunities to Capture and Amplify Students’ Voices Subcommittee: We have been brainstorming ways to encourage students’ voices to be heard, attached. Please see highlights below:
-
Help students with mental health resources.
-
Safe, small group Roundtable, social-emotional learning environment where students voice their concerns and share their successes. In-person or virtual, similar to Black Student Union CRPP Roundtable.
-
Campus Cultural Events.
-
-
IDEA FIG: I regularly attend Tim Welch’s IDEA FIG meetings where we continue to explore how we can support and promote inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility for students and colleagues in our campus community. During our last meeting, we discussed our LGBTQIA+ survey and incorporating Coastline College’s Cultural Awareness Webpage into our website.
-
Dream Resource Center: On 10/23/2024, I attended the Emotions before Elections meeting to better serve our college and students with respect to Dreamers’ emotional response to the upcoming presidential election.
-
They Can’t Kill Us: I have been promoting WLAC student, Johnathan Bloodwolf Lopez's 2024 film, They Can’t Kill Us, now streaming on Amazon Prime video. This film profiles the often-unheard rich and complex history of Native American tribes through interviews of various tribes. I suggested that he bring this film to the American Film Market and connected him with WLAC student, Jade Meyer, who edited the film:
-
-
Community:
I have spent the last year attending DEIA events that promote my progress toward proficiency in DEIA-related competencies, including:-
BRIC: On March 15, 2024, I attended the 8-Hour BRIC Summit Industry Day, held at the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity. Here, I met with leaders, educators, creators, and advocates from all aspects of the industry to collectively solve DEIA issues within entertainment, media, and tech. Together, we workshopped solutions and action plans centered on hiring practices, the threat of AI, and other DEIA issues, with the goal of creating more inclusive opportunities for underrepresented groups to be successful. Please see Keynote speakers, Wayne Brady and Mandie Taketa below:
-
2024 Careers in Entertainment Expo: On May 16, 2024, I attended the 2024 Careers in Entertainment Expo. This DEIA event is sponsored by the Entertainment Equity Alliance (EEA), a coalition of industry-connected workforce, government and labor partners committed to ensuring equity and access to careers in the arts and entertainment industry for historically excluded and underrepresented groups. I gathered information for our students, networked, and reached out to others about West Los Angeles College Programs:
-
SCBWI Conference: In February, 2024 I attended the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) conference and reached out to Author, Cece Bell, regarding her book, El Deafo, which is based on her own childhood. She wanted to create a handbook for hearing people so they would know how to understand and communicate with deaf people without being disrespectful. The project evolved into a graphic novel where children who are deaf can see themselves positively represented in a book:
-
Broad Museum, Mickalene Thomas & Yavoi Kusama: In June, 2024, I visited the Mickalene Thomas: All about Love Exhibit. It was truly amazing, and I would have liked to spend more time enjoying it. The theme of the exhibit is for Black women to be seen and understood, and for viewers to become what feminist author, bell hooks, calls “practitioners of love:"
I also visited 95 year-old Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away. Her work is bold and inspiring. Just the title of the piece below makes us think deeply:
-
Art of Native America: The Charles and Valerie Diker Collection: On July 19, 2024, I visited the Art of Native American exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This was an impressive exhibit, showing beautiful artwork and vibrant culture and traditions.
-
911 Memorial Museum: I also visited the 911 Memorial Museum in New York City. It was heartbreaking and difficult to view, but necessary for all people to attend. I watched an excellent film, Boatlift, about the boats throughout the harbor that rescued over 500,000 survivors of 9/11/2001. This museum shows the ultimate price that humanity pays due to hatred:
-
The Museum of Tolerance: On October 7, 2024, I visited the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, California, to study the Holocaust, Ann Frank, and tolerance of many races and religions. This was a difficult endeavor to explore the atrocities committed during WWII. Just as with the 911 Museum, all people should visit this museum to learn religious tolerance and anti-racist practices. This museum also shows the ultimate price that humanity pays due to hatred. Please see an Albert Einstein image below, noting that Hitler put a million dollar price on his head:
-
Culver City Arts Foundation Mexican Heritage Celebration: On October 4, 2024, I attended the Tito's Tacos traditional Mexican Fiesta in Celebration of National Taco Day, including Mariachi, Folklorico, and other performances and activities. All proceeds were given to the Culver City Arts Foundation. This event was impressive and featured an amazing woman, playing a violin with the most intense passion I have ever seen:
-

Teaching Philosophy, Style, and Integrity:
I believe that motion pictures are not only valuable forms of entertainment, but that they are world-changing, powerful forms of communication that shape societies. As a teacher of such a form of communication, not only do I feel that it is my duty to instill a sense of responsibility in the filmmaking process, but to help students understand the important role that media plays in their lives.
I am passionate about Film and Television storytelling in general, and I feel that such an approach inspires my students. I therefore make each subject as interesting and relatable as possible, while also addressing the many different learning styles of students.
For example, I am now teaching Cinema 3 and Cinema 4 at WLAC. My Cinema 3 class this semester is a dual enrollment class at Ánimo High School, Venice. Most of these students are 15 years old and are easily bored by old movies. I therefore sprinkle new, fun shows between older movies, such as the Apple TV + Show, Acapulco, as a lead-in to Citizen Kane. Most of the students love this, and are engaged in the class. Three administrators at Ánimo High School have told me that the students love the class. Please see email from High School Counselor, Carole Moreno, informing me early on, that the students like my class.
I embrace project-based, experiential learning because such an approach values the process as much as, if not more than the end result and allows for creative expression as well as the ability to make critical connections. I encourage lively class discussions, collaboration, and a strong respect for diversity of student populations, learning styles, and educational needs. I also encourage extra credit assignments that allow students to explore the world around them. For example, every semester, I encourage my students to go to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures or to go on a Zoetrope finding scavenger hunt in Culver City and write a report about these experiences. My students love these assignments. Such an approach to teaching allows students to feel safe and free to enjoy the learning process, and as a result, my students excel beyond their expectations.
As an educator, I practice the following:
-
Teach my Film Production students with humor, compassion, clarity, and kindness, assisting them to be completely ready to ace the Avid Media Composer Certification Exam.
-
Ensure that all students are being treated with dignity and fairness, whether learning in an online environment with a Learning Management System such as Canvas, on Zoom, or in a hybrid environment.
-
Answer student Canvas emails in a timely manner.
-
Meet students via Zoom in a timely manner when they need help.
-
Grade student assignments in a timely manner, now clicking on clearly defined Rubric Criteria to grade.
When I first came to West Los Angeles College in 2019, I was amazed by Laura Peterson’s philosophy and have adapted it as my own. Please see Laura's bullet pointed list below.

-
Remember, you are a WEST LA COLLEGE FILM STUDENT, YOU ARE NOT IN THE HOLLYWOOD CPR PROGRAM YET.
-
DO NOT PUT HOLLYWOOD CPR ON YOUR RESUME OR IN ANY OF YOUR COMMUNICATION for getting work. Your resume should include "Hollywood CPR Candidate," but in your communication you are not a graduate of Hollywood CPR, so you cannot include this in an email, text, or any other form of communication. This is important, as the expectations if you are a graduate are high and you are not there yet.
